Forex vs Crypto for Trading Bots: Which Market Should You Automate?

Automated Trading Platform

You've built a strategy. You've backtested it. Now comes the question: which market should your trading bot trade?

Both forex and crypto offer real opportunities for automated trading. But they have fundamentally different characteristics that favor different strategy types. Choosing wrong means leaving money on the table — or worse, blowing up in a market that doesn't suit your approach.

Market Hours: When Can Your Bot Trade?

Forex: Open 24 hours, 5 days a week (Sunday 22:00 to Friday 22:00 UTC). Closed on weekends. Daily maintenance break around 21:55-22:15 UTC.

Crypto: Open 24/7/365. Never closes. Christmas Day? Trading. Your birthday? Trading.

For bots: Crypto's continuous availability means your bot literally never stops. Forex's weekly close creates gap risk on Monday opens — your bot needs to handle that.

Volatility: How Much Does Price Move?

Forex: Major pairs (EURUSD, GBPUSD) move 0.5-1% daily. Gold (XAUUSD) moves 1-3%.

Crypto: Bitcoin moves 2-5% daily on average. Altcoins can move 10-20%.

For bots: Higher volatility means more trading opportunities but also wider stop-losses. A scalping strategy that works on EURUSD would get destroyed on BTCUSD without adjusting parameters.

Spreads and Trading Costs

Forex: Very tight spreads — 0.1 to 1 pip on major pairs. Low cost per trade.

Crypto: Wider spreads and higher fees. Funding rates on perpetual contracts add hidden costs.

For bots: Scalping strategies (high-frequency, small profits) work better on forex because costs are lower. Swing strategies (hold for hours or days) work well on both because spread impact is proportionally smaller.
