Pip

A "pip" (percentage in point) is the smallest standard increment in a quoted price. For most forex pairs (EURUSD, GBPUSD), one pip is 0.0001. For pairs with JPY, it is 0.01. For gold (XAUUSD), one pip is typically $0.10. Brokers sometimes quote a "fractional pip" or "pipette" at one more decimal.

Why pips exist

Pips standardise small price moves so traders can talk in whole numbers. "Stop at 30 pips" is clearer than "stop at $0.0030 below entry."

Pip values by symbol (1 standard lot)

SymbolPip sizePip value (1 lot)
EURUSD0.0001$10
USDJPY0.01$10 (when JPY/USD ~ 100)
XAUUSD0.10$10
BTCUSD1.00$1

Pipettes

A "pipette" is 1/10 of a pip — the 5th decimal in a forex pair (or 3rd in a JPY pair). Many MT5 brokers quote prices to the pipette for finer execution.
